Bhutan Paro Airport – The world’s toughest

Being surrounded by moutains as high as 18,000 feet Bhutan’s only international airport, Paro Airport has long been known one of the toughest airports to fly in and out. The airport is situated in a deep mountain valley on the banks of the river Paro Chhu, 6 kilometres from the town of Paro. The high mountains are not the only the challenge to pilots trying to land at Paro, the airport also has an incredibly short runway at only 1,964 metres. Due to the danger involved no flights are allowed to operate at night and flights can only operate with clear visual conditions. Upon landing on the mile long landing strip, pilots must maneuver their way through the dense mountains and avoiding houses a long the way. Landing here is so dangerous that it is reported that only a hand full of pilots are allowed to land at the airport. These are just some reasons why Paro is known as one of the world’s toughest airports.

However flying into Paro is one of the only ways for tourists to visit this very happy country, along the way passengers will get a glimpse of some breathtaking views through the Himalayas. The main operator at Paro Airport is Druk Air – Royal Bhutan Airlines, the country’s national carrier. Until late August 2010 it was the only operator flying on international routes to Bhutan and was essential for communication to the outside world bringing in tourists into the country and exporting goods out of the country.

Why not book a flight and have an experience of a lifetime and visit this amazing country of Bhutan?
